Department of Botany

Welcome to the Department of Botany, where we explore the fascinating world of plants and the vital role they play in sustaining life on our planet. The Department of Botany is dedicated to offering high-quality education in Plant Sciences while nurturing environmental awareness and responsibility toward the conservation of natural resources. The department offers M.Sc. Botany since its inception. Plants are at the heart of all life on Earth, and understanding them is essential for a healthier, greener future. Through our program, students gain a strong foundation in plant biology, with a balance of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills.

Our curriculum brings together Core Courses, Electives, and Advanced Research Modules, encouraging an interdisciplinary way of thinking. We believe in learning by doing, which is why our facilities include a Greenhouse and Herbal Garden, where students help cultivate a variety of plant species, a Plant Herbarium, where students collect, document, and preserve plant specimens as part of their research experience.

M.Sc. Botany

At Post Graduate level the department offers specializations in Biodiversity, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Ethnobotany and Taxonomy of Angiosperms for students. To keep students updated with emerging scientific trends and research methodologies, the department regularly conducts Guest lectures by experts, Seminars and webinars, Skill-based workshops, educational tours for field study and plant species collection in natural habitats etc. These experiences help students build confidence, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

If you are passionate about plants, a degree in Botany can open up an exciting and meaningful career path. Our students gain knowledge in areas such as Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms, Taxonomy, Ecology, Plant Physiology, Genetics, Plant Breeding Developmental Biology, Plant Pathology, Crop Improvement, Biotechnology Environmental Conservation Plant Propagation techniques etc.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Botany opens up a wide range of exciting career opportunities across research, environment, education, government, and industry. Graduates can build rewarding careers in research and development as research scientists exploring plant biology and ecology, plant breeders developing improved crop varieties, plant pathologists managing plant diseases, or ethnobotanists studying traditional plant knowledge and developing plant-based products. For those passionate about nature and sustainability, careers in environmental and conservation fields include roles such as conservation biologists, environmental consultants, park rangers or naturalists, and sustainability specialists working to protect ecosystems and promote eco-friendly practices. Botany graduates can also enter education as school science teachers, college lecturers, university professors, or education officers in museums and botanical gardens. Opportunities in government and policy include working as policy analysts, regulatory affairs officers, and conservation officers involved in agricultural and environmental governance. In the industrial and business sector, graduates may work as plant biotechnologists, product development specialists in plant-based foods, medicines, and cosmetics, quality control managers ensuring safety standards, or horticulture experts in nurseries, landscaping, and greenhouse management. Botany graduates contribute significantly to creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world. Their work supports communities, industries, and the environment—making this field both impactful and deeply rewarding.

As the world focuses more on sustainability and climate change, plant scientists are needed more than ever. Botany graduates can advance into exciting future-friendly fields such as Plant genomics and genetic engineering, Climate change research, Ecosystem restoration, Urban farming, vertical farming and   hydroponics, Biofuel and plant-based product development, Plant microbiome and synthetic biology research etc. These careers allow you to contribute to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable world.
